Some common adverbs of frequency in Vietnamese
Luôn luôn, luôn: always
Lúc nào (chủ ngữ) cũng: always
Suốt: always, all the time
Hoài: always, all the time
Thường xuyên: usually
Hay: often
Thường, thường hay: often
Thỉnh thoảng: sometimes
Đôi khi, đôi lúc: sometimes
Không hay: not often
Hiếm khi, hiếm khi nào: seldom
Rất ít khi: rarely
Không bao giờ: never
Position in sentence
– Behind the subject and before the main verb in the sentence
Example:
Tớ thường hay thấy cậu ấy đến đây mua đồ.
I often see him come here to buy things.
Cậu ấy hiếm khi nào tới những chỗ như thế này.
He seldom goes to these places.
Mình không hay ra ngoài vào buổi tối.
I don’t often go out at night.
Cô ấy lúc nào cũng thức dậy muộn.
She always gets up late.
– At the beginning of the sentence
Some adverbs of frequency can be placed at the beginning of the sentence such as: Lúc nào + chủ ngữ + cũng, thỉnh thoảng, đôi khi, đôi lúc, hiếm khi, hiếm khi nào, rất ít khi
Example:
Lúc nào cô ấy cũng về nhà trước tôi.
She always comes home before me.
Thỉnh thoảng cậu cũng nên ra ngoài tản bộ, đừng suốt ngày ru rú trong nhà như thế.
Sometimes you should go out for a walk, don’t stay at home all day like that.
Đôi khi tớ cảm thấy rất cô đơn.
Sometimes I feel very lonely.
Hiếm khi nào tôi thấy anh ấy ra về sớm.
I seldom see him leave early.
– At the end of the sentence
Some adverbs of frequency can be placed at the end of the sentence such as: suốt, hoài (they are often combined with the word “cứ” => [cứ ~ suốt]; [cứ ~ hoài])
Example:
Cô ấy cứ nhắc cậu suốt.
She mentions you all the time.
Con bé mặc cái áo này suốt.
She wears this shirt all the time.
Cậu ta cứ đến đây hoài.
He comes here all the time.
Some other examples
Cô ấy luôn là người đến sớm nhất lớp.
She is always the first to come to the class.
Bố tớ thường xuyên đi công tác xa nhà.
My father often goes on business trips away from home.
Lúc nhỏ, tớ hay đến công viên này chơi.
When I was a child, I often came to this park to play.
Tôi không bao giờ mua quần áo của cửa hàng đó.
I never buy that store’s clothes.
Anh ấy rất ít khi nấu ăn, chỉ toàn đi ăn ngoài.
He rarely cooks, he goes out to eat all the time.
Đôi lúc cậu ấy cũng rất khó tính.
Sometimes he is very difficult.
Họ thường tới nhà hàng này ăn tối.
They often go to this restaurant for dinner.
