What are antonyms?

Antonyms are words that have different phonetics and opposite meaning with each other. A multiple meaning word can belong to many pairs of antonyms.

Example: cứng – mềm (soft – hard); cao – thấp (tall – short); tốt – xấu (good – bad); xinh – xấu (beautiful – ugly); may – xui (lucky – unlucky); thắng – thua (to win – to lose); hiền – dữ (gentle – cruel); tươi – héo (fresh – withered); công bằng – bất công (fair – unfair);…

Classification

Antonyms are divided into 2 categories:

+ Complete antonyms: They are words that have opposite meaning with each other in all cases. When mentioning one word in a pair of complete antonyms, people immediately think of the other word in that pair of complete antonyms.

Example: dài – ngắn (long – short); cao – thấp (tall – short); xinh đẹp – xấu xí (beautiful – ugly); to – nhỏ (big – small); sớm – muộn (early – late); yêu – ghét (to love – to hate); may mắn – xui xẻo (lucky – unlucky); nhanh – chậm (fast – slow);…

+ Incomplete antonyms: When mentioning one word in a pair of incomplete antonyms, people don’t immediately think of the other word in that pair of incomplete antonyms.

Example: nhỏ – khổng lồ (small – giant); thấp – cao lêu nghêu (short – lanky); cao – lùn tịt (tall – dwarfish);…
