Mèo mả gà đồng
Meaning : Referring to those who are rascally, promiscuous and despicable. This sentence is often used to indicate the man and the woman who are cheating on their lovers/spouses.
Example : Đôi trai gái đó đều đã có gia đình hết rồi mà còn qua lại với nhau. Đúng là phường “mèo mả gà đồng”. (Those man and woman are all married but they are still having an affair with each other. They are despicable.)
Mèo khen mèo dài đuôi
Meaning : Referring to those who promote and praise themselves even though they have no great talent at all. It is similar to the idiom “Each bird loves to hear himself sing”.
Example : Chỉ mới giải được một bài toán dễ đến cả học sinh cấp 1 cũng biết giải mà anh ta đã tự khen mình giỏi rồi, đúng là “mèo khen mèo dài đuôi”. (Just solving an easy exercise that even an elementary school student can solve, but he praised himself so much. That is a real case of “each bird loves to hear himself sing”.)
Mèo mù vớ cá rán
Meaning : Indicating those who are very poor but have unexpected good luck. It is similar to the idiom “An oz of luck is better than a pound of wisdom”.
Example : Kẻ nghèo hèn, xấu xí như hắn ta mà cũng lấy được một cô vợ giàu và đẹp như thế, đúng là “mèo mù vớ được cá rán”. (A poor and ugly guy like him can get married with such a rich and beautiful lady. That is a real case of “an oz of luck is better than a pound of wisdom”.)
Rửa mặt như mèo
Meaning : Referring to those who are careless and playing around while working.
Chữ viết như mèo quào
Meaning : Really bad handwriting.
Example : Sao mà chữ xấu như mèo quào thế hả? Mau viết lại cho mẹ. (Why do you have so bad handwriting?. Write again immediately.)
Mèo nhỏ bắt chuột con
Meaning : Advise us when doing something should not be too delusional beyond our abilities, we must know whether we can do the work within our abilities.
Example : Với khả năng hiện tại của cậu thì tôi chỉ có thể giao cho cậu những việc lặt vặt này thôi, “mèo nhỏ thì bắt chuột con”, nếu cậu cố gắng thì nhất định mai này có thể làm được những chuyện lớn khác. (With your current abilities, I can only give you these errands, if you try your best, you can definitely do other big things in the future.)
Mèo mù móc cống
Meaning : Indicating a person who has no means to make a living and must do humble things to survive.
Example : Ông ta trước đây rất giàu có, nhưng vì vướng vào cờ bạc nên đã mất hết sạch tài sản. Ông ta bây giờ cứ như “mèo mù móc cống” vậy, nghèo đến mức có thể làm bất cứ chuyện gì kể cả ăn cướp để có miếng ăn sống qua ngày. (He was rich in the past, but because of gambling, he lost all his money. He is now so poor that he can do anything, including robbing, to survive.)
Như mèo thấy mỡ
Meaning : Being too eager
Example : Hắn ta rất thích tiền. Hắn ta nhìn thấy tiền cứ như mèo nhìn thấy mỡ. (He really likes money. He sees money like a cat sees fat.)
Mỡ để miệng mèo
Meaning : Beware of theft.
Example : Đi ra đường mà đeo nhiều trang sức quá thì rất nguy hiểm, chẳng khác nào “mỡ để miệng mèo”. (Going out while wearing too much jewelry is very dangerous, it’s like fat is near cat’s mouth.)
Ăn như mèo hửi
Meaning : Indicating people who eat very little.
Example : Sao cậu “ăn như mèo hửi” vậy? Ăn nhiều lên đi chứ! Bộ cậu ngại à? (Why do you eat so little? Eat a lot! Are you shy?)
Mèo già hóa cáo
Meaning : It means that the elderly people live a long time, so they have gained many valuable experiences. It also means that the beginners do everything timidly, but after a long time, they become clever and sly. It like the idiom “Old birds are not caught with chaff”.
Example : Lúc mới tới đây, cô ấy vô cùng nhút nhát, không làm được việc gì ra hồn. Nhưng bây giờ thì nhìn xem, cô ấy bây giờ cứ như “mèo già hóa cáo”, trở nên tinh lanh vô cùng. (When she first came here, she was very shy that she could not do anything well. But now she is very clever and sly.)

Meaning : When you have fallen into difficult situations, you will love those who are not as lucky as you.
Example : Trước đây tôi không hề hiểu được sự khó khăn của bố mẹ khi nuôi nấng tôi trưởng thành, và bây giờ, khi tôi có con, tôi mới hiểu được những nỗi khó khăn ấy. Đúng là “ăn nhạt mới biết thương mèo”. (I didn’t know the difficulties my parents met when raising me, but now, when I have children, I came to understand it. When you have fallen into difficult situations, you will love those who are not as lucky as you.)
Chẳng biết mèo nào cắn mỉu nào
Meaning : Everyone has their own specialty, so it is not sure who is better.
Example : Đừng có vội huênh hoang tự đắc như vậy, vẫn chưa biết được mèo nào sẽ cắn mỉu nào đâu. (Don’t be so cocky, we still don’t know who is better.)
Im ỉm như mèo ăn vụng
Meaning : Referring to those who intentionally hide their mistakes by keeping silent, or referring to those who hide benefit to enjoy alone, not share to anyone.
Example : Tớ rất hiểu cậu ấy. Cứ mỗi lần mà cậu ấy làm chuyện gì sai là sẽ cố giấu nó đi và cứ “im ỉm như mèo ăn vụng” vậy đấy. (I really understand him. Whenever he does something wrong, he will try to hide it by keeping silent about it.)
Mèo vật đụn rơm
Meaning : Referring to those who don’t have much talent but like to do big things.
Tiu nghỉu như mèo cắt tai
Meaning : Because he / she is disappointed and sad, he / she doesn’t want to talk and do anything.
Example : Sao trông cậu “tiu nghỉu như mèo cắt tai” vậy? Có chuyện gì sao? (Why do you look so disappointed? What’s up?)
Rình như mèo rình chuột
Meaning : Referring to a patient, diligent person who do something to the end.
Mèo uống nước bể chẳng bao giờ cạn
Meaning : If you save money, you won’t be afraid of difficulties in the future.
Example : Không nên xài tiền phung phí mà hãy tiết kiệm, có như vậy thì sau này có gặp khó khăn cũng không sợ bị đói. Nên nhớ rằng “mèo uống nước bể chẳng bao giờ cạn”. (You should not spend money too much, save it, if so, you don’t need to be afraid of difficulties in the future.)
Lèo nhèo như mèo vật đống rơm
Meaning : Repeating talking about something to beg for it.
Example : Đừng có “lèo nhèo như mèo vật đống rơm” nữa. Con có xin bao nhiêu lần thì mẹ cũng không cho con đi ra ngoài chơi vào ban đêm đâu. (Don’t repeat those words anymore. No matter how many time you ask me, I won’t let you go out to play at night.)
