Chó ngáp phải ruồi
Meaning : Getting lucky, luck comes naturally.
Example : Người như cậu mà cũng có thể đạt được vị trí cao này, đúng là “chó ngáp phải ruồi”. (Someone like you can also achieve this high position, what a score.)
Chó treo, mèo đậy
Meaning : Used to remind people to be always careful.
Example : Con trông nhà cẩn thận nhé. Nhớ là “chó treo, mèo đậy” đấy. (Take care of the house while I’m gone. Be always careful.)
Chó ăn đá, gà ăn sỏi
Meaning : Describes an arid place with hard conditions and it is difficult to live in that place.
Example : Làm sao mà tôi sống được ở một nơi “chó ăn đá, gà ăn sỏi” như thế này chứ. (How can I live in such a harsh place.)
Chó dữ mất láng giềng
Meaning : When raising fierce dogs in the house, the neighbors will be afraid to come over.
Example : Anh hãy bảo con anh rằng đừng có lúc nào cũng hung dữ với người khác như vậy. Nên nhớ rằng “chó dữ thì mất láng giềng” đấy. (Tell your child not to be so aggressive towards others. Remember that “if you raise fierce dogs in your house, the neighbors will be afraid to come over”.)
Chó cậy nhà, gà cậy chuồng
Meaning : Someone depends on his advantage to bully others.
Example : Hắn ta đúng là “chó cậy nhà, gà cậy chuồng”, chỉ vì có bố là Hiệu trưởng trường này mà hắn không xem ai gì cả. (He is “a cock which is valiant on his own dunghill, since his father is the principal of this school, he treats everyone badly.)
Chó chê mèo lắm lông
Meaning : One bad person calling the other person that they are bad. It is similar to the idiom “The pot calling the kettle black”.
Example : Cô ta dám chê bai bọn mình làm không tốt sao, làm như cô ta làm tốt lắm ấy. Đúng là “chó chê mèo lắm lông”. (How could she criticize us for not doing well, she didn’t do a great job either. The pot calling the kettle black.)
Treo đầu dê, bán thịt chó
Meaning : Saying one thing and doing another thing.
Example : Cái cửa hàng đó rõ ràng nói trên tivi là bán quần áo sản xuất ở Thái Lan, khi mua về rồi mới phát hiện là không phải. Đúng là “treo đầu dê, bán thịt chó”. (That store said on television that it was selling clothes made in Thailand, but when I bought clothes there, I found out they weren’t made in Thailand. That store cries wine and sells vinegar.)
Chó có (mặc) váy lĩnh
Meaning : Spending or doing things recklessly and ridiculously. Or indicates an absurd and mythical story.
Example : Hắn ta nghèo đến như thế vậy mà quần áo mặc thì vô cùng sành điệu, đắt tiền, khác nào “chó có váy lĩnh”. (He is so poor but his clothes are extremely stylish and expensive, how ridiculous.)
Chó gầy hổ mặt người nuôi
Meaning : If you raise a dog, you have to take care of it well. On the contrary, if your dog is skinny, you will be laughed at by neighbors.
Chó cùng cắn giậu
Meaning : A person who is cornered will resist to live.
Example : Chính bởi vì anh chèn ép họ quá mức, mà chó cùng thì cũng phải cắn giậu, nên chuyện họ phản kháng lại như vậy cũng là điều dễ hiểu. (Because you forced them too much, it is understandable that they protested against you. A person who is cornered will resist to live, after all.)
Chó cắn áo rách
Meaning : Someone is extremely poor and still lost his things.
Example : Tôi chỉ còn vài xu trong túi để mua đồ ăn, thế nào lại bị rớt mất tiêu, đúng là “chó cắn áo rách”. (I only have few pennies left in my pocket to buy food and I lost it. It never rains but it pours.)
Chạy như chó phải pháo
Meaning : Very afraid of something.
Example : Cứ mỗi lần gặp bà ta là anh ấy lại “chạy như chó phải pháo”. (Whenever he meets her, he runs like a lamplighter.)

Chó già giữ xương
Meaning : A person who is so selfish and greedy that he won’t let others have it even though he doesn’t need it. It is similar to the idiom “Dog in the manger”
Example : Cái đó cậu không dùng đến thì cho người ta mượn đi, đừng có như “chó già giữ xương” như thế chứ. (If you don’t use it, lend it to them, don’t be like a dog in the manger.)
Chó giữ nhà, gà gáy sáng
Meaning : Each person has a duty of their own so we shouldn’t be jealous.
Chó chực chuồng chồ
Meaning : Describes people who are willing to humble themselves to get a chance to earn filthy money (chuồng chồ: a place to defecate).
Example : Hắn ta đúng là “chó chực chuồng chồ”. Chỉ vì muốn được thăng chức mà sẵn sàng làm trò hề cho sếp xem. (He is a person who is willing to humble himself to get a chance to earn filthy money. Just because he wants to get promoted, he is ready to humiliate himself for the boss.)
Chó cái cắn con
Meaning : Referring to the image of a mother who is cruel to her own children.
Nhờn chó chó liếm mặt
Meaning : In the literal meaning, it means that when raising a dog, if you play with it too much, it will lick your face, and if it is an evil dog, you will be bitten. In the figurative meaning, it means when treating someone too well or trusting someone too much, you will be taken advantage of or deceived.
Chó nhảy bàn độc
Meaning : A poor and incompetent person reached a higher position due to a chance.
Chó ăn vã mắm
Meaning : Indicates the the quarrel and scramble.
Example : Chửi như chó ăn vã mắm (cursing at others).

Meaning : Describes a stubborn and conservative person who refuses to admit his faults.

Meaning : Not really good but always pretending to be nice.
Example : Hắn ta đúng là đồ “chó ghẻ có mỡ đằng đuôi”, làm ra bao nhiêu chuyện ác độc như thế vậy mà lúc nào cũng ra vẻ lương thiện, tốt tính. Bộ hắn tưởng không ai biết chuyện mà hắn đã làm hay sao. (He is such a hypocrite. He has done so many bad things and still pretends to be kind. Does he think no one knows what he did?)
Đá mèo quèo chó
Meaning : Someone gets angry with something else but venting his anger to other people with lower position than him.
Example : Cô ta bực mình vì mới bị sếp la, nhưng tự nhiên cô ta lại trút cơn giận đó lên chúng ta. Đúng là “đá mèo quèo chó”. (She gets angry because she was scolded by the boss, but she vented her anger on us. She is a person who always lets off steam on innocent bystanders.)
Hổ xuống đồng bằng gặp chó cũng chào
Meaning : Losing and being miserable makes you bow down the person who used to be worse than you.
