What is euphemism?

– Euphemism is a subtle way of talking that reduces or avoids inciting and offending others.

– Example:

+ Ông ấy chết rồi (He died) –> Ông ấy đi / qua đời rồi (He passed away): “chết” can be replaced by “đi” or “qua đời” in order to alleviate the pain.

+ Cái áo của cậu xấu thật (Your shirt is so ugly) –> Cái áo của cậu không được đẹp lắm (Your shirt is not very nice): use “không được đẹp lắm” to replace “xấu” in order to avoid offending others.

Some ways to use euphemisms

Use synonyms

– You can use synonyms, especially Sino-Vietnamese words, to replace words that need to be understated.

– Example:

+ Cô bé ấy bị mù hả? (Is she blind?) –> Cô bé ấy bị khiếm thị hả? (Is she visually impaired?): “khiếm thị” is synonymous with “mù”.

+ Tôi cũng không chắc lắm, phải mổ mới biết được (I’m not too sure, I need to perform surgery to know exactly) –> Tôi cũng không chắc lắm, phải phẫu thuật mới biết được (I’m not too sure, I need to perform surgery to know exactly): “phẫu thuật” is synonymous with mổ.

Use antonyms in combination with negative words

– Example:

+ Cậu ấy chậm chạp lắm, chúng ta nhờ người khác đi (He is slow, let’s ask someone else) –> Cậu ấy không được nhanh nhẹn lắm, chúng ta nhờ người khác đi (He’s not very agile, let’s ask someone else): “nhanh nhẹn” is antonym of “chậm chạp”, when “nhanh nhẹn” is used with the negative word “không được”, the sentence will be more polite and we can avoid offending others.

+ Câu trả lời này sai rồi (This answer is wrong) –> Câu trả lời này chưa chính xác lắm (This answer is not very correct): “chính xác” is antonym of “sai”, when “chính xác” is used with “chưa ~ lắm”, the sentence will be more delicate.
