How to say hello
When meeting someone for the first time, we should say hello to that person. The most common greeting in Vietnamese is “Xin chào”. You can simply say “Xin chào”, or add the pronoun that indicates the person who you are talking with right after it, for example: Xin chào anh, Xin chào chị, Xin chào bạn, Xin chào ông… You can also say “Chào anh”, “Chào chị”, “Chào bạn”, Chào ông… instead of saying “Xin chào~”.

How to ask someone’s name and introduce your name
You can ask someone’s name by using this structure: Tên của [đối tượng giao tiếp] + là gì?. The part [đối tượng giao tiếp] will be replaced by the appropriate pronoun that indicates the person who you are talking with. For example, if you are talking with the woman, you can ask “Tên của chị là gì?” or “Tên của cô là gì?”. You can also use shortened sentences such as: Tên [đối tượng giao tiếp] + là gì?; [Đối tượng giao tiếp] + tên gì?

Tên của bạn là gì vậy?
Cháu tên gì thế?
Tên anh là gì?
To introduce your name, you can use the following structure: Tên của tôi là + [tên của bạn]. Or you can use shortened sentences such as: Tên tôi là + [tên của bạn]; Tôi tên là + [tên của bạn]; Tôi + là + [tên của bạn]. The pronoun “tôi” will be replaced by another pronoun depending on who you are talking with.
Example:
Tên của tớ là Nam.
Tên tôi là Minh ạ.
Dạ, cháu tên là Ngọc ạ.
Mình là Lan.
In addition, at the first meeting, you can say Rất hân hạnh được làm quen với bạn or Rất vui được biết bạn after introducing your name. These sentences are used to express how happy you are to get to know someone. They mean “Nice to meet you” in English.
