Positive form:

Example:

Đây là một món ăn ngon.
This is a delicious dish.

Mình là người rất thích hát.
I’m a person who loves singing.

Hôm nay là thứ bảy.
Today is Saturday.

Negative form:

  • Subject + không phải là + noun / noun phrase

Example:

Cậu ấy không phải là người nước ngoài.
He is not a foreigner.

Đây không phải là sở trường của em.
This is not my strength.

Đó không phải là người mà em đang tìm.
That’s not the person who I’m looking for.

Đây không phải là áo khoác của tớ.
This is not my coat.

Interrogative form:

  • Subject + có phải là + noun / noun phrase + không?
  • Subject + là + noun / noun phrase + hả?

Example:

Cậu có phải là Nam không?
Are you Nam?

Bạn là người Việt Nam hả?
Are you Vietnamese?

Đây là vở của cậu hả?

+ When describing the state, properties, characteristics of something or someone, thì is often followed by an adjective.

Example:

Ông ấy thì giàu, còn tôi thì nghèo.
He is rich and I am poor.

Nhà thì rộng mà lại chẳng có ai ở.
The house is large, but no one lives in it.

+ We can also use thì with any subject.

+ Grammar structure

Positive form:

  • Subject + thì + (adverb) + adjective

Example:

Nước biển thì mặn.
Seawater is salty.

Cái áo này thì sạch, còn cái áo kia thì bẩn.
This shirt is clean and that shirt is dirty.

Tóc thì ngắn, còn râu thì quá dài.
The hair is short, but the beard is too long.

Negative form:
