Usage 1:

Position in the sentence :

“Ấy” is a demonstrative pronoun placed at the beginning of the sentence as a subject.

Note: As a subject, “ấy” is placed only at the beginning of the sentence and goes only with “là”.

Meaning and example :

Meaning: “Ấy” refers to someone or something far from both speaker and listener, or refers to something that has just been mentioned.

Example:

A: Người đó là ai vậy?
B: Ấy là Lan, học sinh mới của lớp tớ đấy.
(Trong ví dụ này, “Ấy” chỉ người xa người nói và người nghe)
A: Who is that person?
B: That is Lan, the new student of my class.
(In this example, “Ấy” refers to a person far from both speaker and listener)

A: Anh không nên mắng cậu ấy trước mặt nhiều người như vậy.
B: Ấy là tôi muốn giúp cậu ấy trở nên tốt hơn thôi.
(Trong ví dụ này, “Ấy” chỉ sự việc vừa mới được đề cập trước đó: mắng cậu ấy)

A: You shouldn’t scold him in front of so many people.
B: That is because I want to help him become better.
(In this example, “Ấy” refers to something that has just been mentioned: scold him)

in everyday comversation “ấy” is alse refer to listener :

A : tớ có quà cho ấy này
A : i have a gift for you

B : oa, quà gì đấy !
B : oh, what is it?

Other examples:

Ấy là em gái tôi.
That is my younger sister.

Ấy là ca sĩ mà tôi thích nhất.
That is my favorite singer.

Ấy là nơi mà tôi đã gặp chồng mình.
That is where I met my husband.

A: Sao cậu lại không cho tớ mượn vở bài tập của cậu chứ?
B: Ấy là do tớ muốn cậu phải tự làm lấy bài tập của mình, như vậy thì mới có ý nghĩa chứ.
A: Why don’t you lend me your homework?
B: That is because I want you to do your homework by yourself so that it makes sense.

A: Sao cậu lại tới muộn vậy?
B: Ấy là do tớ ngủ quên.
A: Why did you come so late?
B: That is because I overslept.

Usage 2:

Position in the sentence :

“Ấy” is a demonstrative adjective that is placed after a noun.

Meaning and example :

Meaning: Used to indicate a person, a thing or an event that has just been mentioned.

Note: When nouns that indicate kinship go with “ấy”, they become personal pronouns of the third person (ông ấy, bà ấy, cô ấy, chú ấy, bác ấy, dì ấy, anh ấy, chị ấy, em ấy…).

Example:

Ông Minh là một người rất tốt bụng. Mọi người ai cũng đều quý ông ấy.
Mr. Minh is a kind person. Everyone loves him.

Chỗ ấy nguy hiểm lắm nên đừng có đến gần.
That place is dangerous, so don’t come there.

A: Cô ấy là ai vậy?
B: À, cô ấy là giáo viên mới của trường tớ đó.
A: Who is she?
B: Oh, she is the new teacher of my school.

A: Hiệu sách này nằm ở đâu vậy?
B: À, hiệu sách ấy nằm ở gần nhà tớ đó. Cậu định mua sách à?
A: Where is this bookstore?
B: Oh, that bookstore is near my house. Are you going to buy books?

A: Hôm qua có một vụ tai nạn xảy ra ở gần trường bọn mình đó.
B: Thật sao?
A: Cậu không biết chuyện ấy à?
B: Tớ mới biết luôn đó.
A: There was an accident near our school yesterday.
B: Really?
A: Don’t you know it?
B: I just knew it.

A: Hôm kia sao cậu không đi học?
B: Tại hôm ấy tớ bị bệnh.
A: Why didn’t you go to school the other day?
B: Because I was sick that day.

A: Ca sĩ ấy hát hay lắm đó.
B: Vậy sao? Tôi thì thấy cô ấy hát không hay lắm.
A: That singer sings well.
B: Really? I think she doesn’t sing very well.
