Position of “cho” in the sentence :

“Cho” is a preposition.

Meaning and example :

Meaning: Used to indicate the object that receives the action, or the object that undergoes the effects from something. “Cho” also indicates the purpose, the degree or the requirement that an action has to meet.

Example:

Tôi đi mua đồ cho mẹ. (Biểu thị đối tượng tiếp nhận hành động. Trong ví dụ này, “mẹ” là đối tượng tiếp nhận hành động “đi mua đồ” của “tôi”)
I go shopping for mom. (Indicate the object that receives the action. In this example, “mẹ” is the object that receives the action “đi mua đồ” of “tôi”)

Uống nước tốt cho cơ thể. (Biểu thị đối tượng chịu tác động, ảnh hưởng của một việc gì đó. Trong ví dụ này, “cơ thể” là đối tượng chịu tác động của việc “uống nước”, cụ thể là chịu tác động tốt)
Drinking water is good for your body. (Indicate the object that undergoes the effects from something. In this example, “cơ thể” is the object that undergoes the effects from “uống nước”)

Tôi cố gắng làm cho xong công việc rồi mới về nhà. (Thể hiện yêu cầu, mục đích, mức độ cần đạt được. Trong ví dụ này, “xong công việc” là mục đích cần đạt được)
I try to finish all the work before going home. (Indicate the purpose, the degree or the requirement that an action has to meet. In this example, “xong công việc” is the purpose that the action “làm” has to meet.)

Note:

+ The form “cho / làm cho / khiến cho + clause (used to express a result)” indicates a result that happened due to a cause.

+ The form “cho được / cho bằng được” indicates determination to achieve a good result.

+ The form “cho rồi / cho xong / cho qua” express a reluctant attitude of acceptance of something that has just been mentioned in order not to be uncomfortable. The speaker doesn’t need to know what result will happen.

Other examples:

Tôi đi mua quà để tặng cho bà.
I buy a present for my grandmother.

Hãy cho tôi biết lý do vì sao hôm qua em không đi học.
Tell me why you didn’t go to school yesterday.

Con chó nhà hàng xóm cứ sủa không ngừng khiến cho tôi không thể ngủ được.
The neighbor’s dog barks incessantly, which makes me unable to sleep.

Thức khuya có hại cho sức khỏe.
Staying up late is harmful to health.

Phải ôn bài cho kĩ thì mới có thể đậu kì thi.
You must review all the lessons carefully to pass the exam.

Tôi nhất định phải mua quyển sách ấy cho bằng được.
I will definitely buy that book at any cost.

Trời mưa thế này thì làm sao mà đi ra ngoài chơi được. Thôi ở nhà cho rồi.
How can we go out in the heavy rain. We should stay at home.
