Usage 1:

Position in sentence :

“Chứ” is a conjunction.

Meaning and example :

Meaning: “Chứ” is used to confirm something that has just been mentioned and at the same time, to reject the contrary idea.

Note: In conversations, we can use the following expression to assert that “that is certain and cannot be otherwise” : chứ + đại từ + gì, chứ ai, chứ sao… There are also other forms such as: …chứ sao lại…?, …chứ không phải…, …chứ không…, chứ…nữa, etc.

Example:

Đây là tên con trai chứ không phải là tên con gái đâu. Đừng nhầm lẫn.
This is a boy’s name, not a girl’s name. Don’t be confused.

Tôi thích mèo chứ không thích chó.
I like cats, not dogs.

Người tôi thích là cậu chứ không phải là anh ta.
The one I like is you, not him.

A: Là ai đã làm bể bình hoa?
B: Thằng Nam chứ còn ai nữa. Chỉ có nó hay chạy nhảy gần chỗ này thôi.
A: Who broke the vase?
B: It’s Nam. Who else? Only he usually runs around this place.

Nếu bạn không có tiền thì hãy mượn tôi chứ sao lại ăn cắp của người khác như thế.
If you don’t have money, you should borrow me instead of stealing money from others.

A: Mình sơn bức tường này màu gì đây.
B: Sơn màu xanh chứ màu gì, lúc nãy đã thảo luận xong hết rồi mà.
A: What color will we paint the wall?
B: Blue. What else? We have already discussed it before.

A: Cây bút đẹp quá! Nó có đắt lắm không?
B: Không đắt đâu. Có 15.000 chứ mấy!
A: The pen is so beautiful! Is it very expensive?
B: It’s not expensive. Only 15,000 dong!

A: Vậy ra người lấy trộm đồ của cậu là hắn ta à?
B: Chứ ai nữa. Ngay từ lúc đầu tớ đã không thích hắn rồi.
A: So the guy who stole your stuff was him?
B: Who else? I don’t like him from the beginning.

A: Hôm qua cậu về nhà trễ có bị gì không?
B: Thì bị ba mẹ mắng chứ sao. Tớ còn bị cấm không cho ra ngoài chơi sau 5 giờ chiều nữa.
A: Was there anything wrong with you when going home late yesterday?
B: I was scolded by my parents. I was also prohibited from going out after 5 pm.

Usage 2:

Position in sentence :

“Chứ” is a sentence final particle.

Meaning and example :

Meaning: “Chứ” is used when the speaker wants to confirm his/her thoughts or wishes, or used to reject, require or remind something.

Note: We can use the following forms: …đi chứ!, …được chứ?, …chứ ạ?

Example:

Gia đình cậu vẫn khỏe chứ? (Xác định lại điều mà người nói nghĩ)
Your family is still fine, right? (The speaker wants to confirm his/her thought)

A: Đáp án của câu này là A đúng không?
B: Là B chứ!
(Thể hiện ý bác bỏ)
A: The answer of this question is A, right?
B: It’s B!
(Used to reject something)

Mau tới nhanh đi chứ! Mọi người đang chờ cậu đấy. (Yêu cầu)
Come quickly! Everyone is waiting for you. (Used to require something)

A: Cậu có biết nữ diễn viên ấy không.
B: Biết chứ! Cô ấy là thần tượng của tớ đấy.
(Khẳng định điều vừa được nói đến)
A: Do you know that actress?
B: Of course I know! She is my idol.
(Used to emphasize what has just been affirmed)

Ngày mai anh đến đây sớm được chứ?
Can you come here early tomorrow?

Cuối tuần này bọn tớ sẽ đi xem phim. Cậu cũng đi cùng chứ?
We’re going to see movie this weekend. Don’t you go with us?

Anh mau nói đi chứ! Anh không nói thì làm sao chúng tôi giúp anh được đây.
Please say it! If you don’t say, how can we help you?

A: Đây là tiếng Nhật đúng không?
B: Không, là tiếng Trung Quốc chứ.
A: Is this Japanese?
B: No, it’s Chinese

A: Bữa tiệc ngày mai, cô cũng đến chứ ạ?
B: Vâng, tất nhiên rồi.
A: You will come to the tomorrow’s party, right?
B: Yes, of course.
