How to use có in Vietnamese – Vietnamese grammar

Hello everyone! In this post, we would like to introduce you to the lesson : How to use có in Vietnamese – Vietnamese grammar.

Position in sentence :

Is a particle.

Meaning and example :

Meaning: Describe a small quantity or low cost of something.

Note: 

+ As a verb, “có” indicates the existence of things or people.

+ “Có” can be replaced by “chỉ” to express the limited extent of something.

+ We can also use the following forms: chỉ…có…, có…thôi, có… chứ mấy!

Example:

Cái áo này giá có 20.000 đồng. (Cái áo này giá chỉ 20.000 đồng)
This shirt costs only 20,000 VND.

Tôi có nuôi một con mèo rất dễ thương. (“có” là động từ)
I have a very cute cat. (“có” is a verb)

Bữa tối cậu ăn có một bát cơm, cậu cảm thấy không khỏe ở đâu hả.
You ate only one bowl of rice at dinner, are you unwell?

Tôi chỉ có 10.000 đồng trong túi thôi, không đủ để mua quyển sách ấy.
I only have 10,000 VND in my pocket, it’s not enough to buy that book.

Tối hôm qua tớ chỉ chơi game có 2 tiếng.
I played game for only 2 hours last night.

A: Bài kiểm tra lần trước cậu được bao nhiêu điểm?
B: Tớ được có 3 điểm chứ mấy!
A: How many points did you get in the last test?
B: I got only 3 points, not more!

Tới chỉ đến đó có một lần nên không nhớ rõ đường đi lắm.
I went there once, so I don’t really remember the way.

Chỉ có 2 người chúng ta thì không vác nổi cái thùng này đâu. Phải kiếm thêm người giúp thôi.
Only the two of us can’t carry this box. We must get more helpers.

Kỳ nghỉ hè này tớ được nghỉ có 1 tháng chứ mấy!
In this summer vacation, I have only 1 month off, not more!

Thằng bé đó suốt ngày chỉ có chơi game thôi, nó không chịu học gì cả.
That boy only plays game all day, he doesn’t study anything.

Đứa bé đó mới có 2 tuổi mà đã thuộc hết bảng chữ cái rồi.
That child is only 2 years old, but he/she has already remembered the alphabet.
