Is an adverb.

Meaning and example :

Meaning: Indicates a certain condition that leads to a particular result, or expresses the continuation of an action, regardless of conditions. In many cases, “cứ” is also used to invite, to give an order or request, to encourage or to defy.

Note: We can use the following forms:

+ Cứ…là…(expresses an cause-effect relationship and can be used to talk about habit or repetition)

+ Cứ ngày ngày, cứ chiều chiều, cứ đêm đêm

+ …vẫn cứ…, cứ…vẫn…, nhưng/mà (…) vẫn cứ…

+ (nhưng) cứ phải…

+ …cứ việc…

+ Cứ + danh từ (noun) + mà + động từ (verb): The noun is the foundation, basis or direction of the verb.

+ Cứ thế! : Expresses the meaning “continue to do the action in the same way, don’t be concerned or worried about anything else” (Cứ thế mà làm! = Go right ahead!)

Example:

Cứ đến sáng là gà gáy.
Every morning, the chicken crows.

Dù sợ nhưng tôi vẫn cứ thích xem phim kinh dị.
I’m scared of horror movies, but I still like watching them.

A: Đừng có chọc ghẹo con bé ấy nữa. Nó khóc bây giờ!
B: Tớ cứ chọc nó đấy! (Thách thức)
A: Stop teasing her. She will cry!
B: I will tease her anyway! (to defy)

Tôi đã nhắc anh ấy bao nhiêu lần mà anh ấy vẫn cứ quên tắt điện mỗi khi ra ngoài.
I have reminded him many times, but he keeps forgetting to turn off the lights whenever he goes out.

Anh cứ tự nhiên như ở nhà, không cần phải ngại đâu! (mời mọc)
Make yourself at home, don’t be shy! (to invite)

A: Ngày mai cậu có ở nhà không? Tớ định mang cuốn sách đã mượn hôm trước trả cho cậu.
B: Tớ cũng không biết nữa. Nhưng mà nếu tớ không có nhà thì cậu cứ việc để sách vào hòm thư nhà tớ nhé.
A: Are you home tomorrow? I am going to return the book I borrowed the day before to you.
B: I don’t know. If I’m not home, put the book in my mailbox.

Cứ trời mưa là đường ướt.
Whenever it rains, the roads get wet.

Cứ mỗi khi ăn kem là tôi lại cảm thấy đau đầu.
Whenever I eat ice cream, I have a headache.

Cứ theo cách này mà làm thì nhất định sẽ thành công thôi.
Following this way, we will definitely succeed.

Cứ chiều chiều là tôi lại cảm thấy nhớ quê hương.
Every afternoon, I miss my hometown.

Dù không thích nhưng tôi vẫn cứ phải ăn món đó.
I don’t like that dish, but I must eat it.
