Hello everyone! In this post, we would like to introduce you to the lesson : How to use đấy in Vietnamese – Vietnamese grammar.
Usage 1:
Position in sentence :
Is a demonstrative pronoun.
Meaning and example :
Meaning: Indicates a person / place / thing that is far from the speaker or mentioned previously. “Đấy” is also used to indicate the point of time which was mentioned previously.
Note: “Đó” is a dialectical variation of “đấy” (Southern dialect).
Example:
Đấy là nơi mà tôi đã sinh ra.
That is where I was born.
Tôi đã từng đi đến đó một lần.
I’ve been there once.
Đó là món quà mà tôi thích nhất. Mẹ đã tặng nó cho tôi.
That is my favorite gift. Mom gave it to me.
Từ đấy tôi không còn đi ra ngoài vào ban đêm nữa.
Since then I haven’t gone out at night.
A: Đó là ai vậy?
B: Cô ấy là giáo viên chủ nhiệm mới của lớp tớ.
A: Who is that?
B: She’s the new homeroom teacher of my class.
Huế rất đẹp. Ở đó còn có rất nhiều món ăn ngon. Tôi rất muốn đi đến Huế một lần.
Hue is very beautiful. There are also many delicious food there. I really want to go to Hue once.
Usage 2:
Position in sentence :
Is a demonstrative placed after a noun or pronoun.
Meaning and example :
Meaning: Indicates a concrete thing which is far from the speaker and can be near to or far from the listener.
Example:
A: Cái mũ đấy cậu mua hết bao nhiêu tiền vậy?
B: Cái mũ này rẻ lắm. Chỉ có 20.000 đồng thôi.
A: How much was that hat?
B: This hat is really cheap. Only 20,000 VND.
A: Người đó là ai vậy? Hình như tớ chưa gặp cậu ấy bao giờ.
B: Đó là học sinh mới của lớp tớ.
A: Who is that person? I’ve never seen him before.
B: That’s the new student of my class.
Ca sĩ đấy là thần tượng của tôi.
That singer is my idol.
Cây dù đấy của ai vậy?
Whose umbrella is that?
Trong căn phòng đấy có gì vậy?
What’s in that room?
Usage 3:
Position in sentence :
Is a particle placed at the end of the sentence or at the end of a part of the sentence.
Meaning and example :
Meaning: Expresses the reality of the thing which has just been mentioned in order to ask, to remind, to warn, to evaluate or assess.
Example:
A: Đó là ai vậy?
B: Cô ấy là giáo viên chủ nhiệm mới của lớp tớ đấy.
A: Who is that?
B: She’s the new homeroom teacher of my class.
A: Ai đấy?
B: Là tôi. Tại thấy cửa mở nên tôi mới vào luôn. Xin lỗi vì sự thất lễ này.
A: À, không sao đâu.
A: Who?
B: It’s me. I saw the door open so I came in. Sorry for being rude.
A: Ah, it’s okay.
Cô ấy vẽ đẹp lắm đấy.
She painted very well.
A: Làm cái gì đấy? Mau đi học bài đi.
B: Dạ vâng.
A: What are you doing? Study now.
B: Yes.
Chạy chậm thôi. Coi chừng té đấy.
Run slowly. Watch out for falling.
Chỗ đó nguy hiểm lắm đấy. Đừng có đến gần.
That place is very dangerous. Don’t come any closer.
