Usage 1 :

Position in sentence :

Is a demonstrative pronoun.

Meaning and example :

Meaning: Used to talk about people, things or places that can be seen but are far from both the speaker and listener.

Note: Distinguish between “kia” and “ấy / đấy / đó”:

+ “Kia” is used to talk about people, things or places that can be seen but are far from both the speaker and listener.

+ “Ấy / Đấy / Đó” is used to talk about people, things or places that may or may not be seen.

Example:

Kia là cái gì thế?
What is that?

A: Kia là ai thế?
B: Hình như là học sinh mới.
A: Who is that?
B: Maybe he / she is a new student.

Nghe nói hôm qua ở kia có xảy ra tai nạn.
I heard that there was an accident over there yesterday.

Kia là con gì thế?
What animal is over there?

Đằng kia là lối thoát hiểm.
Over there is the emergency exit.

Nhìn kìa! Kia là cây cầu nổi tiếng ở Việt Nam đấy.
Look! Over there is a famous bridge in Vietnam.

Usage 2 :

Is a demonstrative placed after a noun.

Meaning and example :

Meaning: Used to talk about people or things that are far from the speaker and the listener, but can be seen. “Kia” also refers to a point of time which is indefinite.

Example:

Người kia là ai vậy?
Who is that person?

Bức tranh kia trông đẹp quá.
That picture is so beautiful.

Trước kia tôi từng sống ở đây.
I used to live here before.

Tòa nhà kia là tòa nhà cao nhất Việt Nam.
That building is the tallest building in Vietnam.

Con mèo kia trông thật đáng yêu.
That cat is so cute.

Tôi đã gặp anh ấy ở sân bay vào hôm kia.
I met him at the airport the other day.
