How to use ngay in Vietnamese – Vietnamese grammar

Hello everyone! In this post, we will introduce to you the lesson: How to use ngay in Vietnamese – Vietnamese grammar.

Usage 1 :

Position in sentence :

Is an adverb.

Meaning and example :

Meaning: Expresses the quickness of one action after another.

Note: 

+ In many cases, “ngay” can be replaced by “liền” or combinations like “lập tức”, “tức thì”, “tức khắc”…

+ We can use the following forms: ngay sau; ngay khi

Example:

Hôm nay trên tivi phát sóng chương trình mà tôi yêu thích nên vừa đi học về là tôi mở tivi lên ngay.
There was a program I like on TV today, so after getting home from school, I turned on the TV immediately.

Nghe tiếng chuông điện thoại, tôi ngay lập tức bắt máy.
Hearing the phone ringing, I immediately picked up.

Tôi cảm thấy buồn ngủ ngay khi tiết học bắt đầu.
I felt sleepy as soon as the class started.

Họ ly dị nhau ngay sau khi kết hôn được vài tháng.
They divorced after only a few months.

Tôi quay đầu lại ngay khi nghe tiếng ai gọi tên mình.
I turned around as soon as I heard someone calling my name.

Usage 2 :

Position in sentence :

Is a particle placed before a noun describing time or location.

Meaning and example :

Meaning: Emphasizes the precise time or location described by the noun after  “ngay”.

Note: 

+ In some cases, “ngay” can be replaced by “đúng”, “đúng ngay”

+ We can use the following forms: ngay + cạnh / bên / trong / trước / giữa + place; ngay + bây giờ / lúc này / hôm nay / từ đầu

Example:

Lúc nãy tôi còn gặp cô ấy ở ngay đây cơ mà. Không biết cô ấy bỏ đi đâu mất rồi?
I met her right here a while ago. Where did she go?

Nhà tôi ở ngay cạnh trường.
My house lies right next to the school.

Tôi sẽ cố gắng hoàn thành công việc này ngay trong hôm nay.
I will try to finish this work today.

Tôi sẽ đi ngay bây giờ.
I am going right now.

Ngay giữa căn phòng có một con mèo.
There is a cat in the middle of the room.

Usage 3 :

Position in sentence :

Is a particle.

Meaning and example :

Meaning: Expresses an unusual situation, in which something that you expect to happened or to be known (due to a sphere of influence) has in fact not happened or is not known.

Note: 

+ “Ngay” is often combined with “cũng”

+ In many cases, “ngay” can be replaced by “kể cả”, “thậm chí”, “đến”

+ We can use the following forms: ngay đến…cũng…; ngay cả…cũng…; ngay như…cũng…

Example:

Ngay cả tôi cũng không thể thuyết phục được anh ấy.
Even I couldn’t convince him.

Chuyện ấy, ngay đến tôi cũng không biết.
Even I didn’t know that.

Ngay cả nơi này tôi cũng chưa từng đến.
I’ve never even been to this place.

Ngay cả giáo viên cũng chưa chắc đã giải được bài tập này.
Even teachers may not be able to solve this exercise.

Ngay cả bộ phim như thế này cũng làm cô ấy khóc.
Even a movie like this makes her cry.
