Usage 1 :
Position in sentence :
Is a verb.
Meaning and example :
Meaning: Used to give a command, a request or to express what must be done as a compulsion or obligation.
Note:
+ “Phải” and “nên” are verbs used to express requirement, compulsion or necessity, but “phải” is a stronger command word than “nên”.
+ When talking about a necessity, we use “phải” instead of “nên”.
Example:
Con không được thức khuya mà phải đi ngủ sớm.
You must not stay up late but have to go to bed early.
Vì ngày mai có bài kiểm tra nên tối nay tôi phải ôn bài cho thật kỹ.
Because there is a test tomorrow, I have to carefully study for it tonight.
Ngày mai cậu nhất định phải đến đây sớm đấy.
You must come here early tomorrow.
Phải rửa tay sạch sẽ trước khi ăn.
You must wash your hands before eating.
Tôi phải nộp bản báo cáo này cho sếp trước ngày mai.
I have to submit this report to my boss by tomorrow.
Usage 2 :

Is a verb.
Meaning and example :
Meaning: Used to express the idea that someone undergoes something unlucky or unfavourable as expressed by the object which follows.
Note:
+ In this usage, “phải” has the same meaning with “bị” and is opposite with “được”.
+ “Bị” is always placed before the verb, and “phải” is always placed after another verb or before a noun.
+ The form phải + noun only occurs in idiomatic expressions such as: phải đòn, phải gió, phải lòng…
Example:
Nam bị ba mẹ phạt phải quỳ gối cho đến giờ cơm.
Nam was fired to kneel until the meal time by his parents .
Tôi mua phải hàng giả rồi.
Unfortunately, I bought fake goods.
Tôi phải đợi hắn ta cả tiếng đồng hồ.
I had to wait for him for an hour.
Chúng tôi đã phải lòng nhau ngay từ giây phút đầu gặp mặt.
We fell in love with each other right from the moment we met.
Lâm phải ngồi tù sáu tháng.
Lam got six month’s imprisonment.
