Meaning and example :

Meaning: Expresses a negative action or state which has the possibility of happening but, in the end, doesn’t happen.

Note:

– Distinguish between “suýt” and “sắp”:

+ “Suýt” expresses a negative action or state which has the possibility of happening but, in the end, doesn’t happen.

+ “Sắp” expresses the possibility of something happening just after a certain point of time.

– “Suýt” can be used with “nữa / chút nữa” making clusters which have similar meanings as “suýt” (suýt nữa, suýt chút nữa).

Example:

May mà đến kịp, suýt chút nữa là trễ giờ học rồi.
How lucky, I was almost late for school.

Sáng nay, suýt chút nữa là tôi đã bỏ quên đồ ở trên xe buýt lúc chuẩn bị xuống xe.
This morning, I almost forgot my things on the bus when I was about to get off.

A : Lúc nãy suýt nữa là bị xe tung rồi. Đúng là may thật.
B : May gì mà may. Phải đi đứng cho cẩn thận chứ!
A: I almost got hit by a car just now. How lucky!
B: It is not lucky. You should be carefully!

Suýt thì làm vỡ cái bình hoa rồi. Nó mà vỡ một cái là tụi mình thế nào cũng bị mắng cho mà xem.
We almost broke the vase. If it is broken, we will get scolded.

Suýt nữa thì không bắt kịp chuyến xe buýt cuối rồi.
I almost didn’t catch the last bus.

Cửa hàng đó bán đồ giả à? May quá, tôi suýt mua đồ ở đó.
That store sell fake products? Luckily, I almost bought products there.

Hôm qua tớ suýt bị mẹ mắng vì làm vỡ cái ly, cũng may là lúc đó có khách tới chơi.
Yesterday, I almost got scolded by my mother for breaking a glass, but fortunately, there were guests visiting at that time.
