Usage 1
Position in sentence :
Is a pronoun.
Meaning and example :
Meaning: Refers to an idea that is mentioned before.
Note: “Thế” is used in questions (it is often placed at the beginning of the question) to connect what will be asked with what has just been said or to a situation.
Example:
A: Trận đấu đã sắp bắt đầu rồi mà không tìm thấy đội trưởng ở đâu hết.
B: Thế thì rắc rối rồi.
A: The match is about to start, but we can’t find the captain anywhere.
B: That’s a problem.
A: Tôi sẽ nói cho cô ấy biết mọi bí mật của anh.
B: Anh không được làm thế.
A: I will tell her all your secret.
B: You can’t do that.
A: Cậu thấy bộ phim này như thế nào?
B: Cũng khá hay. Thế còn cậu?
A: What do you think about this movie?
B: It’s quite interesting. So, what about you?
A: Tôi đã gặp ông ấy rồi.
B: Thế ông ấy có nói gì không?
A: I met him.
B: So, did he say anything?
A: Tớ cho vào đây 4 muỗng muối nhé.
B: Cậu bỏ nhiều thế thì món ăn sẽ mặn lắm đấy. 2 muỗng là được rồi.
A: I will add 4 tablespoons of salt into the food.
B: If you add a lot of salt into the food like that, it will be very salty. Just 2 tablespoons of salt is fine.
Usage 2

Is a particle.
Meaning and example :
Meaning: Used to ask about something happening at the moment of speaking, or to ask for more information about what has happened.
Example:
A: Có chuyện gì thế?
B: Hình như là có tai nạn xảy ra thì phải.
A: What happened?
B: It seems that an accident happened.
A: Cậu đã đi đâu thế?
B: À, tớ đi đến thư viện trả sách.
A: Where did you go?
B: Oh, I went to the library to return the books.
A: Em đang làm gì thế?
B: Em đang tính bỏ đống sách cũ này vào nhà kho. Anh giúp em một tay nhé.
A: What are you doing?
B: I’m thinking of putting these old books in the storehouse. Can you help me?
A: Cậu mua gì thế?
B: Tớ mua quần áo mới.
A: What did you buy?
B: I bought new clothes.
Cô ấy nói gì thế?
