How to use toan in Vietnamese – Vietnamese grammar

Position in sentence :

Is a verb.

Meaning and example :

Meaning: The subject intend to perform an action immediately, but finally he / she does not do it.

Note: “toan” only goes with intentional verbs.

Example:

Lúc cãi nhau, tôi toan đánh anh ấy.
While arguing with each other, I intended to hit him.

Lúc nãy tôi toan nói với cô ấy chuyện này.
I intended to tell him this earlier.

Hôm qua, tôi toan đưa cho cậu ấy vật này, nhưng cuối cùng đã không đưa.
Yesterday, I intended to give him this thing, but finally I didn’t give it.

Cửa hàng đó lừa đảo khách hàng sao? May quá, hôm qua tôi toan mua đồ ở đó.
Did that store cheat customers? Luckily, I intended to buy things there yesterday.

Tôi toan nói ra bí mật của mình cho người bạn thân nhất nghe nhưng đã không nói.
I intended to tell my best friend my secret but didn’t say it.

Tôi toan mắng anh ấy vì mắc lỗi quá nhiều lần.
I intended to scold him for making so many mistakes.

Tôi toan mua cái nón ấy, nhưng vì đắt quá nên cuối cùng đã không mua.
I intended to buy that hat, but finally I didn’t buy it because it was so expensive.
