Usage 1 :
Position in sentence :
Is a noun.
Meaning and example :
Meaning: Indicates a quantity, a specific amount of something that both the speaker and the listener already know.
Note:
+”Từng” can be replaced by “ngần” / “chừng”.
+”Từng” is always followed by “ấy” / “đó” / “này”.
Example:
Anh ta đã từng đó tuổi rồi mà vẫn còn phải sống bám vào ba mẹ.
He is at that age but he still depends on his parents.
Phải làm từng ấy việc thì biết đến bao giờ mới được ra về.
We must do so many things, so we don’t know when we can leave.
Tôi đã mua từng ấy tiền sách.
I spent such amount of money on books.
Cậu đã lớn từng này rồi mà vẫn chưa biết nấu cơm à?
You are at this age but you still can’t cook rice?
Một mình tớ sao ăn hết được từng ấy đồ ăn?
How can I eat such amount of food alone?
Usage 2 :
Position in sentence :
Is an adverb placed before a verb or an adjective.
Meaning and example :
Meaning: Expresses an action or state that someone has experienced at least once in the past.
Note: We can use the following forms : đã từng; chưa từng (have not experienced something from the past until now).
Example:
Tôi từng đi đến Nhật Bản một lần.
I have been to Japan once.
Tôi đã từng xem bộ phim ấy. Nó thật sự rất thú vị.
I have seen that movie. It was really interesting.
Tôi chưa từng ăn món này bao giờ.
I have never eaten this dish.
Tôi chưa từng gặp ông ấy.
I have never met him.
A: Cậu từng đọc quyển sách này chưa?
B: Chưa, tớ chưa từng đọc nó.
A: Have you read this book?
B: No, I have never read it.
Usage 3 :
Position in sentence :
Is a quantifier.
Meaning and example :
Meaning: Describes in turn the order of each individual member of a group.
Note: We can use the following forms : từng…một; lần lượt (…) từng…một.
Example:
Ông ấy trao giải thưởng cho từng thí sinh.
He gives prizes to each contestant.
Thầy giáo trả lời từng câu hỏi của học sinh.
The teacher answered, in turn, each question of the students.
Tôi bước từng bước một lên bậc thang.
I walked step by step up the stairs.
Cô ấy bắt tay và cảm ơn từng người một vì đã giúp đỡ mình.
She shook hands and thanked each person for helping her.
Trước khi đi, cậu ấy nói lời tạm biệt với từng người một trong lớp.
Before leaving, he said goodbye to each person in class.
Tôi tiến hành làm lần lượt từng việc một.
I do things one by one.
