Possessive case in Vietnamese

Hello everyone! In this post, Tiếng Việt online will introduce to you about Possessive case in Vietnamese

Possessive case in Vietnamese

Possessive adjective :

A possessive adjective expresses the possessive feature of a person or thing with the noun that comes after it. The possessive adjective depends on the owner, not the noun that comes after it. Therefore, whether behind a possessive adjective is a plural or singular noun, it has only one form. When expressing the ownership, we add “của” before the noun describing the owner.

Của anh/ chị

Của bạn /tớ/ mình/ cậu

Của cô/ dì/ chú/ bác/ ông/ bà

Của bố/ mẹ

Của em/ cháu

For example:

Đây là chỗ ngủ của con chó. (This is the dog’s sleeping place)

Possessive case :

Possessive case is a form of grammar structure that refers to the ownership of a person / thing to another person / thing. Possessive case indicates the ownership relationship between nouns.

For example :

Kia là chiếc ô của Jack (That is Jack’s umbrella)

Bố của Nam (Nam’s father)

Just like English, possessive case in Vietnamese is also used for people, countries, living things. For non-living things, we often omit the word “của”. We can still use the word “của”, but omitting it will make the sentence better.

For example :

Mái của ngôi nhà -> Mái nhà (Roof)

Những cái chân của cái bàn -> Những cái chân bàn (Table legs)

Above is: How to talk about the ownership in Vietnamese. It’s easy, right? Wish you all good study.
