What is repetition?
– Repetition is a way of repeating a word, a phrase or a sentence in order to emphasize and list. Repetition is often used in literature, especially in poetry.
– Example:
+ Học, học nữa, học mãi (“Study, study more, study forever” – Lenin) => emphasize the importance of learning.
+ Anh ấy giỏi nấu ăn, giỏi dạy con, giỏi kiếm tiền. Đúng là một người chồng hoàn hảo (He is good at cooking, good at raising children, good at making money. What a perfect husband) => list the good qualities of the husband.
Types of repetition
Điệp ngữ nối tiếp
– Repeated words or phrases are placed one after another.
– Example:
Mơ khách đường xa, khách đường xa
Áo em trắng quá nhìn không ra
(Đây thôn Vĩ Dạ, Hàn Mặc Tử)
=> the phrase “khách đường xa” is repeated twice in order to emphasize the distance and nostalgia for old friends.
Điệp ngữ chuyển tiếp
– Word or phrase at the end of the previous sentence or verse is repeated at the beginning of the following sentence or verse.
– Example:
Cùng trông lại mà cùng chẳng thấy
Thấy xanh xanh những mấy ngàn dâu
Ngàn dâu xanh ngát một màu
Lòng chàng ý thiếp ai sầu hơn ai?

– Repeated words or phrases are separated by some words or sentences.
– Example:
Đồng Đăng có phố Kỳ Lừa,
Có nàng Tô Thị, có chùa Tam Thanh
=> the repeated word “có” helps readers feel a passionate love for the hometown.
