What are synonyms?
Synonyms are words that have the same or quite same meaning with each other, and in many cases, they are interchangeable. Synonyms are also often used in Vietnamese.
Example: xe lửa = tàu hỏa (train); heo = lợn (pig); chết = qua đời = mất (to die); siêng năng = chăm chỉ (assiduous); ăn = chén (to eat); khiêng = vác (to carry); xui xẻo = xúi quẩy (unlucky); buồn = sầu (sad);…
Classification
Synonyms are divided into 2 categories:
+ Complete synonyms: They are words that have the same meaning with each other and are interchangeable.
Example: trái = quả (fruit); hổ = cọp = hùm (tiger); bố – ba (father); mẹ = má (mother); đất nước = tổ quốc (country); cây viết = cây bút (pen); gan dạ = dũng cảm (brave);…
+ Incomplete synonyms: They are words that have the same meaning but indicate different nuance of expression or way of acting with each other. You should be careful when using these words.
Example:
ăn = chén: the word “chén” is more informal than the word “ăn”.
yếu đuối = yếu ớt: “yếu đuối” indicates the lack of physical or mental strength, but “yếu ớt” indicates the lack of health (not enough strength to do something).
hi sinh = bỏ mạng: both of them indicate the death, but “bỏ mạng” expresses the contempt of the speaker.
xinh = đẹp: both of them mean to be good-looking, but “đẹp” expresses higher degree.
tu = nhấp: both of them indicate the act of drinking something, but “tu” means to drink a lot in one go and “nhấp” means to drink little by little.
