How to use
– Used to talk about an event that can happen in the present or future when a certain condition is met.
Example:
Nếu trời mưa thì tớ sẽ không đi xem phim.
If it rains, I won’t go to the movies.
Cậu không đi thì tớ cũng không đi.
If you don’t go, I won’t go.
– Used to talk about an event that cannot happen in the present when a certain condition is met.
Example:
Nếu tớ là cậu thì tớ sẽ nhận lời mời của cô ấy.
If I were you, I would accept her invitation.
Nếu mình có tiền, mình sẽ mua căn nhà này.
If I had money, I would buy this house.
– Used to talk about an event that could not happen in the past when a certain condition had met.
Example:
Nếu hôm qua con đi ngủ sớm thì hôm nay đã không dậy muộn rồi.
If you had gone to bed early yesterday, you wouldn’t have woken up late today.
Nếu em chịu học hành chăm chỉ thì đã không bị điểm kém rồi.
If you had studied hard, you wouldn’t have got bad marks.
Structure
Subordinate clause is in positive form
Nếu / Nếu như + subordinate clause + thì + main clause (You can omit the word “Nếu / Nếu như”)
Or: Nếu / Nếu như + subordinate clause, main clause
Or: Main clause + nếu / nếu như + subordinate clause
Trường hợp / Trong trường hợp + subordinate clause + thì + main clause
Or: Trường hợp / Trong trường hợp + subordinate clause, main clause
Giả sử + subordinate clause + thì + main clause
Ví dụ / Thí dụ + subordinate clause + thì + main clause
Note: Subordinate clause and main clause can be in past tense, present tense or future tense.
Example:
Nếu như con nghe lời mẹ, mẹ sẽ dẫn con đi công viên chơi.
If you listen to me, I will take you to the park.
Nếu cậu ấy đến thì cậu đưa cái này cho cậu ấy giùm tớ nhé.
If he comes, please give this to him for me.
Tớ sẽ cho cậu mượn cuốn sách này nếu như cậu cho tớ số điện thoại của anh ấy.
I’ll lend you this book if you give me his phone number.
Tớ mà là cậu ta thì tớ nhất định sẽ không để lỡ mất cơ hội này.
If I were him, I definitely wouldn’t miss this opportunity.
Nếu cậu đến sớm thì đã gặp được anh ấy rồi.
If you had come early, you would have met him.

If it’s too sunny, we will stay at home.
Subordinate clause is in negative form
Nếu / Nếu như + subordinate clause + thì + main clause (You can omit the word “Nếu / Nếu như”)
Or: Nếu / Nếu như + subordinate clause, main clause
Or: Main clause + nếu / nếu như + subordinate clause
Trường hợp / Trong trường hợp + subordinate clause + thì + main clause
Or: Trường hợp / Trong trường hợp + subordinate clause, main clause

Note: Subordinate clause is in negative form of past tense, present tense or future tense.
Example:
Nếu ngày mai trời không mưa thì bọn mình sẽ đi xem phim.
If it doesn’t rain tomorrow, we will go to the movies.
Nếu như thư viện không mở cửa, con sẽ qua nhà bạn chơi.
If the library is not open, I will come to my friend’s house.
Trong trường hợp không có giấy mời, bạn không thể vào trong.
In case you don’t have the invitation, you can’t go inside.
Giả sử cậu ấy không đến thì chúng ta phải làm sao?
What should we do if he doesn’t come?
Thí dụ cậu ấy không có ở nhà thì sao?
What if he’s not at home?
+ You can also use the following structure:
Main clause, trừ phi + subordinate clause (subordinate clause is in positive form, but it means “nếu ~ không” when going with the word “trừ phi”)
Example:
Đội của họ sẽ không thể thắng, trừ phi có phép màu xảy ra. (Đội của họ sẽ không thể thắng nếu như không có phép màu xảy ra.)
Their team can’t won unless a miracle happens.
Trẻ em không được vào trong, trừ phi có bố mẹ theo cùng. (Trẻ em không được vào trong nếu như không có bố mẹ theo cùng.)
Children can’t go inside unless they are accompanied by their parents.
